When marijuana starts getting relegalized.
Pot Legalization Casualties: Oregon Drug Dogs Get the Pink Slip
As Oregon prepares for the advent of legal marijuana beginning July 1, there are already some clear losers. Among them are the state's drug sniffing dogs, for whom the pink slips are in the mail.
Like technicians in a horsewhip factory in the days of yore, Oregon's drug dogs are workers with a skill set made obsolete by changing times. The dogs are trained to detect any number of illegal substances, including marijuana, but now that weed is about to become legal in Oregon, that pot-sniffing skill becomes not an asset, but a liability.
The reason, police said, is that drug-sniffing dogs are often used to alert authorities about the presence of drugs, providing them with the probable cause necessary to initiate a search. If,
That's enough of a snippet - go read the rest.
So, these dogs are, to me, 'canaries in the coal mine'.
Some of us - those who think, feel, and believe the police in this country are just out of control - see that there are simply too many police and those police are here largely because of the 'war on drugs'. The 'war on drugs' is 90% about marijuana and as prgoress is FINALLY being made on correcting this ridiculous set of laws, marijuana becomes legal, like it should be.
And with the war on drugs being 90% about marijuana and the war on drugs being a major reason for hiring cops, it stands to reason that relegalizing pot will reduce the need for so many cops.
Cops have been arresting about 800000 Americans a year - 5 million under (the first) President Clinton alone. That is a LOT of police spending a lot of time arresting perople for nothing and blowing countless hours doing useless paperwork on arrests for nothing.
Marijuana prohibition is (soon to be was?) essentially an entitlement program used ot hire more and more cops.
I suck at math but if we stop arresting 800000 people for nothing each year, what happens to all the police resources that have historically been wasted on this?
Layoffs, of course. No More Work.
These dogs in Oregon are the canaries in the Cannabis Prohibition Coalmine, telling us a new day is coming.
We do not need all these cops.
And marijuana NEVER should have been illegal in the first place.
I welcome the retirement of these dogs.
